Treasures of Iceland

If the South Coast is Iceland 101, this is the graduate course! Soar over glaciers and geothermal waters, volcanoes and valleys, craters and canyons on our quick and comfy sightseeing helicopter. This epic tour with two landings treats you to all the greatest treasures Iceland has to offer. Fly with us to discover Iceland like you’ve never seen it before.

Iceland. Land of ice. A place so desolate that only 20% of the country is habitable, where volcanic eruptions have decimated villages leaving behind vast lava fields, where the sun hardly ever rises half the year and hardly ever sets the other half. Why would someone visit this lonely rock in the North-Atlantic? We’re here to show you.

This quirky little island features some of the most alien landscapes and unique geology on the planet, the country’s northernmost location on the so called “hot spot” of the Atlantic Ridge providing a marriage of fire and ice which creates the conditions for steaming geothermal waters, volcanic crater fields and massive glaciers. This epic helicopter tour with two landings will introduce you to all the special features which make Iceland so one-of-a-kind. By the end you’ll be a certified Iceland graduate.

On our journey into the highlands, we pass some beautiful riverbeds formed by output from nearby glaciers before flying over Eyjafjallajökull glacier volcano which you might remember for its 2010 eruption (we’re sorry if it made you miss your flight!) and the mythical Þórsmörk mountain valley nestled between glaciers Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull. We continue over some sprawling outlet glaciers of the latter one, spellbound by their snowy plains and icy crevasses. The next destination is Landmannalaugar, the pearl of the Icelandic highlands. This magical nature reserve features geothermal steam baths and deep valleys surrounded by multicoloured rhyolite mountains. Although snow covered in winter, these stunning mountain valleys are no less grandiose in their winter coat. You can’t leave Iceland without seeing it, and a helicopter tour is a unique opportunity to see the highland areas which are closed for land traffic most of the year.

Hidden deep in the highlands among mossy lava plains are the vast Laki crater chains, which stretch on for miles and miles of moonlike craters and calderas. Enroute to there we fly over another fearsome spot, Eldgjá (Fire Canyon) which is the largest volcanic canyon in the world. These two sites are culprits to some of the most powerful eruptions in history. The Laki eruption of 1784 led to the formation of the Laki crater chain, and also led to a global famine that killed 25% of the Icelandic population and is thought to have even influenced the start of the French Revolution. An earlier eruption in Eldgjá in 939 had such catastrophic effects in Iceland that it is believed to have influenced Iceland’s switch from pagan beliefs to Christianity at the turn of the first millenia.

Our flight is rounded out by soaring over the weaving riverbeds of Tungnaá (River of Tongues) and the serene highland lake Langisjór (Long Sea), a vast body of water enclosed by mossy green mountain ranges. During this extensive helicopter flight we also provide two breathers in the form of landings at some really special places, where you get to take a little stroll and snap the selfies of a lifetime.
